Overview

The Dock Supervisor is responsible for overseeing all dock operations, ensuring efficient loading and unloading of goods, and managing dock personnel to maintain a safe and productive work environment. This role requires excellent leadership skills, attention to detail, and a deep understanding of logistics and supply chain management. The Dock Supervisor collaborates with various departments to optimize workflow and improve overall operational efficiency.


Duties

Supervision of Dock Operations

  • Oversee daily dock activities, including the scheduling of shipments and coordination of loading/unloading tasks.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and company policies.
  • Monitor the efficient use of dock equipment and resources.

Staff Management

  • Supervise dock workers, including hiring, training, and evaluating performance.
  • Provide leadership and support to the dock team, fostering a positive work environment.
  • Conduct regular staff meetings to communicate goals, expectations, and updates.

Logistics Coordination

  • Collaborate with warehouse management, transportation, and shipping departments to optimize scheduling and operations.
  • Ensure timely processing of incoming and outgoing shipments to meet delivery schedules.
  • Monitor inventory levels and coordinate with inventory management to avoid shortages or overstock.

Safety and Compliance

  • Enforce safety standards and ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Conduct regular safety audits and training sessions for dock personnel.
  • Address safety hazards and implement corrective measures promptly.

Performance Monitoring

  • Track key performance indicators (KPIs) related to dock operations, such as loading times, safety incidents, and employee productivity.
  • Prepare reports for upper management detailing operational performance and areas for improvement.
  • Identify process inefficiencies and recommend solutions to enhance productivity and reduce costs.

Problem Solving

  • Address operational issues promptly, including delays, equipment malfunctions, and personnel conflicts.
  • Liaise with vendors and service providers to resolve external challenges impacting dock operations.

Continuous Improvement

  • Stay updated on industry best practices and advancements in dock management technology.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement among dock personnel, encouraging innovative ideas and solutions.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; a degree in logistics, supply chain management, or related field is preferred.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in a supervisory role within a logistics or warehouse environment.
  • Strong leadership and team management abilities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in logistics software and inventory management systems.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and compliance standards.
  • Problem-solving mindset with strong analytical skills.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects (up to [insert weight]) and perform physical tasks as needed.
  • Willingness to work in various weather conditions and around heavy machinery.
