Overview

A Welder is responsible for joining metal parts together using various welding techniques to create structures or repair damaged components. They play a critical role in manufacturing, construction, and maintenance projects, ensuring the integrity and strength of welded materials.


Duties

Welding Operations:
  • Interpret blueprints, drawings, and welding symbols to determine welding requirements and specifications.
  • Set up welding equipment, including welding machines, gas tanks, and safety gear, in accordance with welding procedures.
Metal Preparation:
  • Prepare metal surfaces for welding by cleaning, grinding, and beveling to remove contaminants and achieve proper fit-up.
  • Position and secure metal parts or assemblies using clamps, jigs, and fixtures to maintain alignment during welding.
Welding Techniques:
  • Perform welding operations using various techniques such as arc welding, MIG welding, TIG welding, or oxy-acetylene welding, depending on the requirements of the project.
  • Monitor welding processes, adjusting parameters as needed to achieve desired weld penetration, bead appearance, and quality.
Quality Control:
  • Inspect welded joints for defects, such as cracks, porosity, or incomplete fusion, using visual inspection or non-destructive testing methods.
  • Repair or rework defective welds to meet quality standards and specifications.
Safety and Compliance:
  • Follow safety procedures and regulations to prevent accidents, injuries, and hazardous exposures during welding operations.
  • Adhere to welding codes, standards, and best practices to ensure the integrity and durability of welded structures.

Qualifications

  • Certification or training in welding techniques and procedures from a recognized institution.
  • Proven experience as a welder in a manufacturing, construction, or industrial setting.
  • Proficiency in using welding equipment, tools, and materials.
  • Knowledge of welding processes, metallurgy, and materials properties.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in welding operations and quality control.
  • Physical strength and stamina to perform welding tasks, including lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
