Overview

A Storekeeper, also known as a Warehouse Clerk or Inventory Controller, is responsible for managing inventory, receiving and storing goods, and fulfilling orders in a warehouse, storeroom, or distribution center. They play a vital role in maintaining accurate inventory records, optimizing storage space, and ensuring efficient flow of goods.


Duties

Inventory Management:
  • Receive incoming shipments of goods, materials, or products, verify quantities and quality against purchase orders or packing slips, and record receipt information in inventory management systems or logs.
  • Organize and maintain inventory storage areas, shelves, or racks, ensuring proper labeling, categorization, and placement of items to facilitate easy access, inventory counting, and stock rotation.
Stock Replenishment:
  • Monitor inventory levels and stock availability, identify low-stock or out-of-stock items, and generate replenishment orders or requisitions to replenish supplies, using inventory management software or manual tracking systems.
  • Coordinate with purchasing or procurement departments to place orders with suppliers, follow up on order status and delivery schedules, and ensure timely receipt and restocking of goods to meet operational needs.
Order Fulfillment:
  • Process customer orders, picking items from inventory shelves or storage areas, verifying quantities and product specifications, and preparing orders for shipment or delivery, adhering to order deadlines and service level agreements.
  • Pack, label, and palletize orders securely for shipment, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with packaging standards, shipping regulations, and customer requirements.
Documentation and Reporting:
  • Maintain accurate records of inventory transactions, including receipts, withdrawals, transfers, and adjustments, and update inventory databases, spreadsheets, or reports accordingly to reflect inventory movements and balances.
  • Generate inventory reports, such as stock status reports, inventory turnover analysis, or aging reports, and provide insights and recommendations to management for inventory optimization, cost reduction, or process improvement.
Quality Control and Compliance:
  • Inspect incoming goods for damage, defects, or discrepancies, and communicate with suppliers or vendors to resolve issues, arrange returns, or initiate claims for damaged or defective items.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations, storage requirements, and inventory control procedures, such as FIFO (First In, First Out), lot tracking, or hazardous materials handling, to minimize inventory shrinkage, loss, or obsolescence.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent education is typically required, with additional training or certification in inventory management, logistics, or warehouse operations preferred.
  • Previous experience in storekeeping, inventory control, or warehouse management is beneficial, with knowledge of inventory management systems, barcode scanners, and warehouse equipment.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail to maintain accurate inventory records, track inventory movements, and perform data entry tasks efficiently and accurately.
  • Physical stamina and the ability to lift, carry, and move heavy boxes or pallets, as well as operate warehouse equipment, such as forklifts, pallet jacks, or hand trucks, safely and effectively.
  • Proficiency in computer skills and familiarity with inventory management software, spreadsheet applications, or enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems to input data, generate reports, and analyze inventory metrics.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with team members, suppliers, and other departments to resolve issues, coordinate activities, and achieve common goals.
