Overview

A Sanitary/Cleaner, also known as a Janitor or Custodian, is responsible for maintaining cleanliness, orderliness, and hygiene in various facilities, including offices, schools, hospitals, or public spaces. They play a critical role in promoting health and safety by ensuring that environments are clean, sanitized, and free from hazards.


Duties

Surface Cleaning:
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces, such as floors, walls, windows, furniture, fixtures, and equipment, using appropriate cleaning agents, disinfectants, and sanitation methods to remove dirt, debris, and harmful pathogens.
  • Dust, sweep, mop, vacuum, or scrub surfaces as needed to maintain cleanliness and appearance standards, and empty trash receptacles, recycling bins, or waste containers regularly to prevent odors and buildup of waste.
Restroom Maintenance:
  • Clean and sanitize restrooms and washroom facilities, including toilets, sinks, countertops, mirrors, and partitions, using disinfectants, toilet bowl cleaners, and restroom deodorizers to eliminate germs, stains, and odors.
  • Restock restroom supplies, such as toilet paper, paper towels, soap, and hand sanitizer, and monitor inventory levels to ensure an adequate supply of consumables for restroom users.
Floor Care:
  • Sweep, mop, strip, wax, or polish floors using appropriate cleaning equipment and techniques, such as floor scrubbers, buffers, or polishers, to maintain floor surfaces and enhance their appearance, durability, and slip resistance.
  • Remove spills, stains, or debris from floors promptly to prevent slips, trips, or falls, and place caution signs or barriers to alert pedestrians to wet or hazardous areas during floor maintenance activities.
Environmental Cleaning:
  • Clean outdoor areas, walkways, parking lots, or building exteriors, including removing litter, debris, or leaves, and power-washing or pressure-cleaning surfaces to remove dirt, grime, or graffiti as needed.
  • Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of common areas, such as lobbies, corridors, stairwells, or entryways, by dusting, sweeping, or wiping surfaces, and arranging furniture or furnishings as directed.
Equipment Care:
  • Operate and maintain cleaning equipment, tools, and machinery, such as vacuum cleaners, floor scrubbers, carpet extractors, or power washers, ensuring proper functioning, safety, and cleanliness of equipment after use.
  • Report any maintenance issues, equipment malfunctions, or safety hazards to supervisors or facility managers promptly, and follow established protocols for maintenance, repair, or replacement of cleaning equipment and supplies.

Qualifications

  • No formal education or prior experience is typically required for entry-level sanitary/cleaner positions, although previous experience in janitorial or custodial work may be advantageous.
  • Knowledge of cleaning techniques, sanitation practices, and use of cleaning agents, chemicals, and equipment commonly used in janitorial work, as well as adherence to safety procedures and regulations governing the handling and disposal of cleaning chemicals.
  • Physical stamina and endurance to perform repetitive tasks, bend, stoop, kneel, or stand for extended periods, lift and carry heavy objects or equipment, and work in various environmental conditions, such as heat, cold, or humidity.
  • Attention to detail and a focus on cleanliness and hygiene, with the ability to follow instructions, work efficiently, and prioritize tasks to meet cleaning schedules and maintain cleanliness standards in assigned areas.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team, as well as interpersonal skills to interact courteously with building occupants, visitors, or fellow cleaning staff in a professional manner.
