Overview

A Carer, also known as a caregiver or support worker, provides assistance and support to individuals who require help with daily activities due to illness, disability, or aging. They play a vital role in improving the quality of life and maintaining independence for those they care for.


Duties

Personal Care:

  • Assist with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, grooming, dressing, and toileting.
  • Help individuals with mobility, transfers, and positioning to ensure their comfort and safety.

Medication Management:

  • Administer medications as prescribed by healthcare professionals, following proper dosage and timing.
  • Monitor and record medication intake, side effects, and any changes in health status.

Meal Preparation and Nutrition:

  • Plan and prepare nutritious meals and snacks according to dietary preferences and restrictions.
  • Assist with feeding or provide encouragement and support to individuals who require assistance with eating.

Emotional Support and Companionship:

  • Provide companionship and engage individuals in social activities, conversation, and recreational pursuits.
  • Offer emotional support, empathy, and encouragement to alleviate loneliness, anxiety, or depression.

Household Assistance:

  • Perform light housekeeping tasks such as cleaning, laundry, and tidying to maintain a safe and hygienic environment.
  • Assist with shopping, errands, and transportation to ensure individuals have access to essential supplies and services.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience in caregiving, healthcare, or a related field is preferred.
  • Compassion, empathy, and patience in working with individuals who may have physical or cognitive challenges.
  • Basic knowledge of healthcare procedures, infection control, and safety protocols.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to interact with individuals, families, and healthcare professionals.
  • Physical fitness and stamina to assist with lifting, transferring, and providing hands-on care.
  • Willingness to undergo background checks, training, and certification as required by regulatory bodies or employers.
